Traveling With your Pet
Always have your pet restrained to some degree(for safety) when you are in public, or when traveling. If you are traveling by air, be certain that your carrier allows your pet to stand and turn around inside because they are not allowed out once inside the plane. Also, make sure that your carrier is approved by the airlines. Your pet has to be fit and healthy for the trip. Different airlines have slightly different requirements, but most of them will allow you to bring your small pet, if he or she is inside a hard case or a tote carrier. These containers must be small enough to fit under the seat. If you are transporting a larger dog, it should be in a hard crate, and have enough room for him or her to move around. These bigger crates have to go under the plane with the luggage. Whether under the seat or in the belly of the plane, your pet should have sufficient amount of water and food for the length of the trip, and also a recent health evaluation from your vet. For crates going in with the luggage, mark them well, "Pet inside", and travel with water and food dishes that don't spill over (you know those baggage handlers). Also, bring a new treat or chew that you know they like, that will be a comfort, and a distraction for the long journey. Always check with your airlines, and get their specific requirements.
Remember no to water or feed your pet 2 hours before traveling, this helps to reduce the pets travel anxiety as well.
Make sure to stay calm and assertive when putting your pet into their "safe" place before travel, pets have intuitive understanding of you as their alpha. The more confident and assured you are the calmer they will be.
