House Training

So now you've brought your new roommate home, where do you begin. Did you find anything about house training, in your pet manual? Of course not. This is where you need a little patience with your new friend. Most puppies do not have any bladder control until they reach four to six months of age. Now is when you have to start keeping track of when they eat and drink. You should get into a habit and stick to it forever. Always feed your pup at the same time, everyday. This will make it much easier for you to know when he needs to take that walk, or be put out in the yard. Pets are just like us when it comes to habits, and being able to predict that time of day will make your life allot easier. Keep your eye on him or here, and read the body language. It might be them just looking toward the door that should give you a clue. But most of all, its timing. An hour or so after a feeding or drinking is when most have to go and get relief. So try to feed your pet at the same time everyday, when you will be there with him or her at that time. If you can't be there, make sure that you confine the pet to a small area, with lots of clean and fresh newspapers spread out. Always clean this area promptly on your return home. Now nighttime is a different story. I firmly believe that the dog crate is the very best way to achieve your goal. Your pet might have an accident or two or three or four, but clean it up promptly and you and he or she will get over it quickly enough. Some pet owners believe that leaving them locked up in a crate at night, or when your not at home is mean, but this is not so. You will see the this home (bed) is a secure environment for them. They feel safe and secure there.
